The Eden Alternative

Purpose, Connection, Empowerment, and Possibility

Welcome to Medicine Hat Care Community, where we prioritize not just care, but connection. As families navigate the journey of finding the ideal home for their beloved family members, we understand the importance of a nurturing environment that fosters genuine relationships and meaningful experiences. That’s why we proudly embrace the Eden Alternative®—a philosophy that redefines the traditional approach to eldercare.

The Eden Alternative® is not just a model; it’s a way of life within our community. At Medicine Hat Care Community, we believe that every individual, regardless of age or ability, deserves a life filled with purpose, joy, and dignity. The Eden Alternative® emphasizes this belief by creating environments where residents actively participate in decision-making, engage in meaningful activities, and form deep connections with others.

What sets the Eden Alternative® apart is its holistic approach to care. Rather than focusing solely on physical needs, we understand the importance of addressing emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. By integrating plants, animals, and intergenerational interactions into daily life, we create an environment that feels like home—a place where seniors can thrive, and families can find peace of mind.

At Medicine Hat Care Community, we invite families to join us in embracing the Eden Alternative® philosophy. Together, we can create a community where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to live their best life. Join us on this journey of connection, compassion, and care.

Eden Moments at Medicine Hat Care Community

The Eden philosophy endeavors to create moments of joy in the lives of our resident Care Partners. Our resident Care Partners have a rich daily experience through companionship; opportunities to feel useful and valued; and connections to nature, animals, and children.

Eden Moments capture the experiences of our residents lived through the Eden principles.

Below are some recent Eden Moments from our Care Community. We hope you enjoy them as much as our resident and staff Care Partners did!

Circle of Gratitude

At Medicine Hat Care Community, residents have found a new hobby to show their gratitude and appreciation for life, people, nature, art, and creativity.

Rock painting has become a staple activity at MHCC, whether recreation ECP’s are on shift, or not. The residents have taken it upon themselves to take part in this activity whenever they feel they need to! They are on the lookout every day collecting and bringing in rocks themselves, taking into consideration that winter is creeping up on us, they want to make sure to stockpile enough rocks to keep them busy all season.

Everyone is always finding new designs and appreciation words and placing them where they feel showcases their work the most! It all started with Gratitude rocks, used to display the things we are most thankful for, and evolving into something so much larger!

Residents have included rocks for Truth and Reconciliation day after learning about some residents that that really resonates with, as well as the LGBTQ+ community. This is something that eases their daily stresses, eliminates the boredom that may come during the evenings, and has formed many strong friendships.  Lynn Oakley shared, “It is the most relaxing activity for me, not only to me but all the residents involved.”

Principle 2 -A caring and inclusive community where our resident care partners paint rocks with meaningful phrases showing others that they do care.

Principle 6 – A meaningful activity, unique to each and every individual as they paint the words that mean something to them personally, giving them a chance to express how they feel and showcase it.

Family Food Fest

We welcomed Autumn on September 22nd by inviting Resident and Employee Care Partners and their families to Medicine Hat Care community for a Family Food Fest!

ECP’s worked extremely well and exhibited excellent teamwork with setting up the lobby area to accommodate 80 Resident and Employee Care Partners and their families. The excitement was in the air for the event throughout our community.

We had great entertainment from Aaron Simpson and served amazing appetizers that were suggested by our Resident Care Partners. This event was a huge success. Janice (our amazing cook) stated “I couldn’t believe the teamwork from all departments, everyone had fun and pitched in. It’s inspiring to see morale so positive and MHCC achieved that 100% for everyone.”

We are proud to have accomplished Eden principle 2- A caring, inclusive, and vibrant community enables all of us, regardless of age or ability, to experience wellbeing by inviting family members of all ages to join along with ECP’s bringing their kids and grandkids to the event.

Good times, Good Food, Good Company, and Good Music were had and enjoyed by all
